Colour and colour realism
Styles
Realism aims to make the tattoo look like a photograph on skin: volume, texture and light without hard outlines. It is the style for portraits of pets and loved ones, for animals and for large pieces that need depth.
The difference from micro-realism is size. Realism needs room for the detail to breathe, which is why it shines on forearms, arms, thighs and backs, in black and grey or in colour.

In a portrait, photo quality drives the result, and we help you pick it.
We leave the space the detail needs to age well.
We advise you based on the image, the placement and your skin.
Realism reproduces an image the way a camera would see it: no outlines, with the form built purely from light, shadow and texture. Done well, the tattoo has depth and seems to rise out of the skin.
It can be worked in black and grey, the most classic and understated approach, or in colour, which gives very vivid pieces and is common for portraits of pets and animals.
This is the most requested motif in realism and the most demanding. The key is the reference photo: good light, good resolution and an angle that shows the expression clearly. With a blurry or very dark photo, there is no way to invent the detail.
If you have several photos, bring them all. We help you choose the best one and, if needed, combine references or add elements like flowers or backgrounds to complete the composition.
Realism needs space: the smaller a portrait is, the less detail it holds over the years. Forearm, arm, thigh, calf and back are ideal because they offer surface area and relatively stable skin.
Medium pieces can be finished in one long session and large ones are spread over several, letting the skin heal in between. We explain everything when we assess your idea.
Size and detail set the quote and the sessions. Send us the reference photo and the placement and we will estimate it.
Popular themes in realism
Size, and with it the approach. Realism works at medium or large sizes with a wide range of greys and volume; micro-realism condenses the detail into a few centimetres. If your idea is very detailed, we will recommend the right size.
A sharp, well-lit, high-resolution photo where the eyes and expression are clearly visible. Avoid heavily compressed screenshots or filtered photos.
It depends on the image and what you want to convey. Black and grey is timeless and understated; colour adds vibrancy and is ideal for pets and nature. We advise you based on your skin and the placement.
Yes, as long as it has the right size and good contrast. What wears it down most is the sun, so use high-factor sunscreen on the area.
