Micro-realism in Barcelona

Micro-realism is compressed realism: the same information as a large portrait squeezed into five or six centimetres. It demands a very specific technique, because the margin for error is tiny and ink tends to spread over the years.

That is why we are upfront about what fits and what does not at a given size. We would rather tell you an idea needs two more centimetres before tattooing it, not after.

Micro-realism: work from the studio

What micro-realism is

Micro-realism takes the technique of realism, with soft shading, volume and texture, and applies it to small-format tattoos. Instead of defining shapes with outlines, they are built with gradients of grey or colour, like a miniature photograph.

It is one of the most demanding styles: every millimetre counts and the margin for error is tiny. That is why it matters to get it done by a specialist, because the same design in different hands can age in very different ways.

Why minimum size matters so much

Ink settles and spreads slightly over the years. On a large tattoo you barely notice, but on a portrait just a few centimetres across it can make the features blur together. That is why we always tell you the minimum size at which your idea will stay defined.

As a guide, a portrait works best from around 6–8 centimetres, and the smaller the details (eyes, lettering, fine textures), the more room they need. We would rather adjust the size in the consultation than see the tattoo lose detail over time.

How to prepare your reference photo

With a portrait, the result depends heavily on the photo. Ideally it is sharp, high-resolution, lit by natural side light, with the face filling a good part of the frame. Cropped group shots or night photos with flash usually lose exactly the information we need.

If you have several photos, send them all: sometimes we combine the expression from one with the lighting from another. And if none of them will work, we will tell you honestly before we start.

Micro-realism is quoted by detail and size. Send us your reference photo on WhatsApp.

FAQ: Micro-realism

How long does a micro-realism tattoo last?

For life, like any tattoo, although it will lose some contrast over the years. The right size, good healing and sun protection make the difference, and an occasional touch-up can bring back intensity.

Can you do a pet portrait in micro-realism?

Yes, it is one of our most requested pieces. We need a sharp, well-lit photo of your pet, and we will recommend a size that keeps the expression and the fur.

Black and grey or colour?

Black and grey tends to age more steadily and is the most common choice. Colour works very well for flowers, eyes or specific elements. We decide based on the reference and your skin tone.

Which areas are best for micro-realism?

Flat areas with little distortion: forearm, upper arm, calf or thigh. Hands, fingers and areas that move a lot are not recommended for this style.
