Micro-realism and fine line

Tattoos by theme
Few images speak of change as clearly as a butterfly, and few carry as much mystery as a moth. That's why both are timeless choices that work in almost any style. In our gallery you'll find everything from a tiny fine line butterfly on a forearm to a blackwork moth spanning an entire chest.
All of these tattoos are the work of the artists at Minka, our studio in Barcelona next to the Sagrada Familia. Each artist interprets wings differently, from Euge's micro-realism to Margo's illustrative blackwork and Nuky's neo-traditional colour. We'll help you choose the style, size and placement, and design it with you so it's unmistakably yours.

The butterfly is the classic symbol of transformation: it goes through several stages before taking flight, so it's linked to hard times left behind, fresh starts and freedom. Many cultures also see it as a symbol of the soul or a sign from someone we've lost, which is why it often appears in tribute tattoos, on its own or alongside a name or date.
The moth is its nocturnal counterpart. Drawn to light in the dark, it's associated with intuition, searching and following whatever lights us up. Its look is darker and more graphic, perfect for blackwork, as Margo's moth across a chest and the moth and bat pair on the knees show. The two also work beautifully together, like two sides of the same story.
Style decides whether your butterfly feels delicate or bold. In micro-realism, like Euge's black and grey butterfly on a calf, the wings gain texture, shading and depth. Fine line, by contrast, sums up the shape in a few clean strokes: that's the approach behind the mini butterfly on the forearm and the pink butterflies fluttering around a cat and dog in another of Euge's pieces.
Margo's illustrative blackwork turns moths into strong, graphic pieces with plenty of contrast, while the linework flowers and butterfly running down an arm show a lighter side. And if you love colour with a touch of humour, neo-traditional opens up plenty of options: Nuky's frog with butterfly wings surrounded by flowers is proof. We'll guide you towards the style that suits you best.
A small butterfly fits almost anywhere: wrist, forearm, ankle, behind the ear or along the collarbone. These spots are easy to show off or cover up, and perfect for a first tattoo. At mini size, though, it pays to simplify the design, because very tight details tend to soften over the years and a clean shape stays readable for longer.
Open wings have a symmetry that suits central placements: the chest, sternum, nape of the neck or upper back, where a large moth looks striking. Knees and elbows suit round designs or matching pairs, like Margo's moth and bat. Calves and thighs leave room for more realism and shading. We design it with you, taking into account how that part of the body moves.
Styles we do it in
Mainly meaning and look. Butterflies are linked to transformation, freedom and remembering loved ones; moths to intuition and seeking light in the dark. Visually, butterflies tend to be lighter or in colour, while moths really come into their own in black, with strong contrast.
Yes, if the design is made for that size. All lines soften a little with time, so for a mini we simplify the wings and avoid crowding the details. If you want lots of detail in the wings, we'll suggest a slightly larger size so it still reads clearly years from now.
Often, yes. Butterflies and moths are great for extending or linking existing pieces, for instance alongside flowers, as in Margo's linework arm. Send us photos or pop in so we can see the tattoo in person, and we'll tell you which size and style fit best with what you already have.
