Getting tattooed in summer in Barcelona: beach, sun and healing
You can get tattooed in summer, but there are rules: how long to wait before swimming, how to protect it from the sun and what to do if you are travelling.

In Barcelona, June and July are among the busiest walk-in months of the year: people on holiday, good weather, and the urge to take home a souvenir. All fine, as long as a couple of things are clear.
Yes, you can get tattooed in summer
There is no medical reason not to. What changes is the environment: it is hot, you sweat more, and the sea and the pool are right there exactly when you cannot use them.
The two non-negotiable rules
Do not submerge the tattoo for 2–3 weeks. No sea, no pool, no jacuzzi, no baths. Standing or chlorinated water on an open wound is the fastest route to an infection, and seawater does not “heal” anything, whatever people say. Quick showers are fine, without scrubbing and without soaking the area.
No direct sun. While it heals, keep it covered with loose clothing. Once closed, factor 50 always. Sun is what fades a tattoo most over the years — more than any other factor.
If you are visiting Barcelona
This comes up all the time: you are here for a week, you want a tattoo, and the beach is ten minutes away. Our practical recommendation is to do it at the end of the trip, not the start. That way you enjoy the sea in the days before and go home with the tattoo mid-heal, where you have your own routine, soap and cream.
If you still do it on day one, count on two weeks without the beach. Better to know before sitting down.
Tips for long sessions in the heat
- Hydrate the day before and bring water.
- Light cotton clothing that leaves the area accessible.
- Avoid coming to a session after a full day in the sun: burnt or very hot skin does not tattoo well.
- For the first days, loose clothing: friction and sweat are the main enemies of clean healing.
